PIER REVIEWED?

A lot of things about bees are ‘believed’ despite the evidence being weak. But, received wisdom can be a poor teacher.

Does it matter that nobody in the know really thinks that bees “shouldn’t be able to fly” or that you really can not charm swarms to land by striking pots and pans or that panicked bees really don’t think that smoke means a forest fire? Well yes, it kind of does, simple stories may have narrative charm, but they have a habit of obscuring even more fascinating truths.

In actuality, bees fly through exploiting complex vortexes around their wings. Swarms land, form a ‘bivouac’ (you’ve seen the pictures), send out scouts and only THEN orientate regardless of any metal being ‘tanged’ nearby. And finally and facinatingly. Bees use chemical PHEROMONES to communicate which get messed up by a Beekeeper’s smoker. Phew, interesting..

So, if we post something about bees here, you can guarantee that we’ve checked it and we’ll add sources so that you can check it too. it will likely have been PEER (not Pier) REVIEWED by pukka scientists in pukka white coats and will have come from trustworthy sources. 🧑‍🔬
