JUDGE FOR YOURSELF

On Friday, a London judge refused to support a Trading Standards complaint against a beekeeper on the sticky question of what constitutes “Raw Honey”. The judge poetically referenced Winnie the Pooh in his summing up, quoting Piglet’s truism that “the things that make me different are the things that make me me’. (LBWF v Odysea Honey, 2024)

Raw Honey, previously argued to refer only to comb honey, is, it seems, sensibly what your local beekeeper has ALWAYS produced. The question of what constitutes ‘processing’ (including by gentle centrifuges like ours) can safely be left for the public to ponder.

We have always been cautious on describing our own honey as “raw”, which in every important respect it seemed to be. Now it appears that it is reasonable in law to assume that the public do know the difference between traditional extraction and inferior/processed Supermarket products.
